What is a Sacrament?

The sacraments are outward and visible signs of God’s inward and spiritual grace. The primary sacraments in the Episcopal Church include Baptism and Holy Eucharist, along with Confirmation, Ordination, Marriage, Unction, and the Rite of Reconciliation (Confession). Other Christian traditions also celebrate these sacraments or ones that are similar.

The most important part of the sacraments is they include God’s people—that includes you—and God in various forms of relationship. Sometimes you will see us post about the Sacraments as designated by the Episcopal Church, but you’ll also see us post and share stories about sacramental experiences—and those often go beyond the traditional definition of sacraments, and sometimes it might be somewhere in between.

Most importantly, we hope to share stories and hear stories that point to outward and visible signs of God’s inward and spiritual grace out in the wild and beautiful world in which we live. When you think you’ve come across one of those stories, capture an image or video, tag us and use #SacramentsInTheWild We would love to hear your stories!
